Through efforts led by Ziggy, on behalf of the Marley family, and Paramount Pictures, the Bob Marley: One Love movie is working to empower the Jamaican communities that helped make the film the beautiful and inspiring work it is. In addition to the economic development brought about by the film’s production, the team has developed three essential programs to provide direct support to the local organizations.

    • An outdoor multi-purpose auditorium auditorium at Trench Town Primary School, named in honor of Colin Keith Smikle, a beloved member of the Trench Town Community, for his contributions to the film. Funds were also offered to the school for their first desktop computers, new desks, and books donated to the students.
    • Funded programs for the Rose Town Foundation, working to improve nutrition education and proper community resources. Counseling for children and adults will also be provided.
    • A studio panel was created for aspiring filmmakers at the University of the West Indies, moderated by a local Bob Marley: One Love crew member and attended by studio executives. Paramount is also participating in the Jamaica Screen Development Initiative (JSDI), building an exchange program for Jamaican crews to train in operations, organization, and marketing at world-class stage facilities.

Additionally, in honor of Bob Marley’s legacy and message, $50,000 is being donated to support ten $5,000 scholarships for students from select HBCUs pursuing degrees in social justice and related majors.

Since the inception of this project, we’ve been keenly aware of the potential positive and negative impacts productions like these can have local communities. As the hometown of Bob Marley and the Marley family, we made every effort to ensure that this film had a positive impact on the people of Jamaica and are continuing to work to make it possible for more films to shoot on the island and provide similar benefits.
